Weeks 5 - Finals Week (subject to change)

WEEK 5

THURSDAY : Midterm exam
In class:
1) Take midterm test
2) Choose five pieces for review of in class drawings. I will call you up individually.
3) In class drawing of skeleton

HOMEWORK :  Due tuesday week 6 { 2-11 }
1) Follow directions on handout and draw a master copy in pencil/sketchbook of John Singer Sargent's Madame X
2) Follow the same directions for Picasso master copy in pen
3) Copy FIGURE 8-16 diagram in your book
4) Copy FIGURE 8-17
5) Take a hard white object, light it. Draw and diagram the various shadows using a pencil and shading stubs such as on page 141 of your book.
6) Read Chapter 8 : Drawing the Human Figure

WEEK 6

In class contour line drawing still life of flowers using your micron pen or similar fine tipped pen(s) and white 18 x 24 paper
Put your homework on the desk for credit

THURSDAY :

HOMEWORK : Due tuesday week 7 { 2-18 }
Bring in your work in progress for Assignment 2  (18x24, white paper) You should have your character's shape mapped out and the ink drawing begun.

Assignment      { 2 }       Points      {  10  }       Due      {  2 / 20 / 14  }

Create a character using props. Set up a still life character using clothes, shoes, hat, something to help you represent a figure or form.
1) Include one area that will be a solid black. This of the black area as a framing device (not literally) 2) Include an area of patterned detail. 3) Include the entire figure and some sens­e of background/room/space that the character inhabits (this can be a baseboard, chair, or window lightly indicated). The project will be executed in line (no shading or color)Use good line variation, accuracy and composition. Complete the project on a high quality piece of 18” X 24” WHITE paper, horizontal or vertical format, using pen and your India ink/brush for areas of flat black. The drawing must be presented cleanly without smudges.  Assignment two is worth 10% of your final grade.

Grading Criteria
1) Did you spend at least 6-12 hours drawing this ?
2) Is the work presented neatly, is there a name, date and title ?
3) Did you follow the basic criteria of using contour line (no shading) ? Draw what you can feel with your fingertips.
4) Is the composition complex and interesting ? Did you challenge yourself ?
5) Is there a highly patterned area? An area of black?

Individual discussion of progress on Assignment 2
We will be drawing from a model - contour line, long pose, pencil or ink (bring your brush)

3 sketchbook pages of two rectangular objects per page drawn in two point perspective
3 sketchbook pages of circular objects per page drawn in perspective
Master copies : Durer & Loomis drawings of 9 heads

WEEK 8

Next class we will use charcoal and ink/bamboo pen/ brush so please bring your sticks, sandpaper, magic rub eraser etc. and wear black or things you don't mind getting dirty.

 WEEK 10

TUESDAY (2-11)

1) Drawing as a Way of Knowing Response Due
2) Turn in your five best in class drawings - I will be using some of these for the display case with your permission.
3) Review video and drawing assignment 3, bring any questions you have to class.

In class: Drawing portraits with charcoal / drawing with reed pen, brush and ink.


 Assignment      { 3 }       Points      {  10  }       Due      {  2 / 18 / 14  }

Draw a self portrait using the proportion guide, this should be a straight on view. You may use charcoal pen or pencil. Include on large area of black (your shirt, hat etc.) Use your white drawing pad.

The drawing must be presented cleanly without smudges.  Assignment two is worth 10% of your final grade. Your blacks should be solid and flat in color - black.
